Modern Christmas celebrations come in many forms, but how did the village of Yim Tin Tsai celebrate in the past?
Teacher and students at Ching Po School would decorate St. Joseph’s Chapel to celebrate the festive season. Alumna recalled that Christmas was always a happy occasion. They brought and placed a perfect pine tree in the chapel and used horsetail grass to decorate. Teacher (Mr. Wu) would ask students to help clean the candlesticks with copper cleaner, until the dark coatings were scrubbed away and turned spotless. After the preparations, everyone would enjoy a Christmas party together. Another villager mentioned that the intense scent of pine trees is one of her memories of the church. It highlights how plants played a significant role in traditional customs, creating a vibrant festive atmosphere.
